Why It's Needed

The ignition coil is an essential component in your vehicle's ignition system. Its primary function is to convert the battery's 12 volts to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs. This spark ignites the air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinders, enabling your car engine to start and run smoothly. Without a functional ignition coil, your vehicle may struggle to start, misfire, or even stall during operation.

How It Works

This part operates by employing electromagnetic principles. When the car's ignition switch is turned on, current flows from the battery to the primary winding of the coil. This creates a magnetic field. When the circuit is interrupted by the ignition system, the magnetic field collapses, inducing a high voltage in the secondary winding. The high voltage is delivered to the spark plugs, creating the crucial ignition spark.

Consequences of a Faulty Coil

If the ignition coil fails, it can lead to a variety of engine performance issues. Symptoms include engine misfires, reduced fuel efficiency, poor acceleration, and an illuminated check engine light. Long-term exposure to these problems without replacement can lead to damage in other engine components and costly repairs.
