How it works

Carbon brushes ride the slip rings to feed the rotor field. With steady magnetism, the stator makes AC power. What happens if it’s broken

Warning lamp on, dim headlights, weak cranking, radio whine, and battery drain are common. Shorted diodes can overcharge and boil the battery; open diodes cause low output and stalling once the battery empties. You may smell burning varnish or see voltage jump on a multimeter.

Tech tips

Disconnect negative terminal, check belt tension, clean grounds, and inspect slip rings. Measure ripple (AC under 0.3 V). Tighten terminals to spec and ensure good airflow behind the alternator.
