Why you need it

VVT on the exhaust cam improves low‑end torque, reduces turbo‑lag (where fitted),lowers fuel use ⛽, and cuts NOx by optimizing overlap. A healthy actuator keeps the ECU’s timing targets accurate in hot, cold, and heavy‑load driving.

How it works

The cam phaser uses engine oil pressure from the OCV to rotate the camshaft relative to the timing chain sprocket. An internal rotor/stator with oil galleries advances or retards the cam angle. The ECU commands position; an internal lock pin stabilizes at idle. Smooth seals and tight clearances prevent bleed‑down and timing drift.

If it fails
