Why this part is needed ️
This precision seal sits in the timing cover around the crankshaft nose. Its job is to keep engine oil inside while the crank spins at high speed, and to keep dust out. A tight seal protects the drive belt area, preserves oil level, and prevents messy leaks on the pulley and underbody. If you notice wetness around the harmonic balancer or a burnt‑oil smell after a drive, this part is due.
How it works
A fluoroelastomer lip, energized by a garter spring, maintains constant radial load on the crank journal. Micro ribs return oil inward as the shaft rotates. The steel shell press‑fits into the timing cover, while an outer dust lip blocks grit. Proper install uses light oil on the lip and a square, even drive until seated.
What happens if it’s bad ⚠️
Hardened or worn lips start as a faint weep, then become a steady leak. Symptoms: oil on the crank pulley, drops on the skid plate, belt squeal, smoke when oil hits the exhaust, and rising oil use. Ignoring it risks belt slip, alternator contamination, and low oil leading to bearing damage.

Replace during timing cover or front main work. Inspect the crank for a groove; fit a repair sleeve if needed. Drive the seal square, do not over‑seat, and torque the pulley bolt to spec. Verify no runout and a clean, dry outer bore.
