It cures speed mismatch that chews teeth, reduces clutch abuse, and keeps the synchro stack healthy for daily driving and spirited use alike.

The ring sits on a gearβs cone and acts like a small cone clutch. When you move the shifter, the fork pushes the sleeve; the baulk ring presses the cone, friction equalizes speeds, then the sleeve slides over aligned teeth to engage the gear. Quality brass/bronze faces resist wear, heat, and glazing for repeatable shifts.
When it fails β
Symptoms: hard or notchy shifting, crunch into 2nd/3rd, gear pop-out on load, and metallic dust in the oil. If ignored, dog teeth chip, hubs overheat, bearings suffer, and you risk a full gearbox rebuild instead of a simple service.
Tech tips
