Engine Front Case Gasket (Timing Cover Seal) – keep your oil where it should be

This gasket seals the joint between the engine front cover and the block. It keeps engine oil inside the timing area, prevents dust and moisture from entering, and helps maintain proper oil pressure around the chain/belt and tensioners. If you’re chasing a front-of-engine oil leak or refreshing the timing system, this is a must-have part for a clean, reliable fix.

How it works βš™οΈ

A molded seal sits in the cover groove and compresses when bolted down. Under clamping force it forms a micro-tight barrier, resisting heat, vibration, and oil splash. Quality material (rubber/silicone/FKM) handles hot oil and thermal cycles. Many engines also need a small RTV bead at joint corners to lock out seepage.

What happens when it fails

  • Oil drips near the crank pulley and lower timing cover
  • Burnt-oil smell and smoke on hot components
  • Contaminated belts, slipping or squeal
  • Low oil level, possible warning light
  • Chain/belt area runs dry β†’ tensioner noise, accelerated wear

Technician tips ️

Clean mating surfaces to bare metal, use correct torque and sequence, dab RTV at corners, replace any brittle grommets, and inspect the crankshaft front seal and water pump while you’re there. Let sealant cure per spec before first start.
