Why itβs needed
This small but critical coolant controller keeps the engine at the correct operating temperature. It speeds warmβup after a cold start, stabilizes temperature under load, and prevents overheating. Proper regulation improves fuel economy, cabin heater performance, emissions, and extends oil and gasket life. A quality Toyota thermostat means consistent cooling, fewer warning lights, and reliable towing or city driving.
How it works βοΈ
Inside the unit is a waxβpellet capsule. As coolant heats up, the wax expands and pushes a plunger that opens the main valve to the radiator while closing the bypass. When coolant cools, a spring returns the valve to the closed position, sending flow through the bypass for faster warmβup. The calibrated opening temperature matches factory specs, keeping the cooling system balanced in all seasons.
When broken β οΈ
Stuck closed: rapid overheating, boiling coolant, hard hoses, risk of warped head or blown gasket. Stuck open: very slow warmβup, weak heater, rich mixture, poor mileage, sludge buildup. Intermittent action causes temperature swings, constant fan operation, and possible ECTβrelated codes. Replace at the first signs of fluctuation or ageβrelated corrosion for safe, efficient driving.
