Rear Planetary Sun Gear Needle Thrust Bearing
This small transmission bearing is a big deal inside the rear planetary gear set. It is needed to carry axial (side) load between rotating parts while keeping friction low. In automatic transaxles, tight clearances and smooth gear mesh depend on this bearing to prevent metal-to-metal rubbing under torque.
How it works
Needle rollers spread the load across many contact points. The thrust design supports end-play forces while the sun gear spins, helping the gear train stay aligned. With proper lubrication, it reduces heat, stabilizes shift feel, and protects the planetary assembly during acceleration and engine braking.
If it fails
When worn or broken, you may get whining/grinding noise, vibration, delayed engagement, or harsh shifting. Debris can contaminate the oil, damaging clutches, bushings, and other bearings. Continued driving can lead to gear scoring, excess end-play, and costly transmission overhaul. βοΈ
