Toyota rear axle shaft oil seal β keep the diff oil where it belongs οΈ
This precision seal sits at the end of the axle tube and locks in hypoid gear oil while blocking dust and water. It protects the wheel bearing, brakes, and differential from leaks and contamination for long, quiet service.
Why you need it
On semi-floating rear axles, the shaft runs through a bearing to the hub. Without a healthy seal, oil escapes, dirt enters, and parts wear fast. A fresh seal maintains correct lube level and stops oil on brake hardware.
How it works
A metal-cased body press-fits in the housing. A spring-loaded rubber lip rides the polished axle shaft, keeping a tight film of oil. Directional ribs return oil to the diff while the axle spins. Fits both RH and LH sides.
What happens if itβs bad
Typical signs: wet backing plate, oil smell, humming at speed, soft brake pedal. Ignoring it risks wheel bearing failure, axle spline wear, contaminated shoes, and costly ring-and-pinion damage.
Tech tips
Clean and inspect the shaft; polish light grooves. Lightly oil the lip, drive the seal in square, and check the diff breather. Replace whenever the bearing is serviced or any leak appears.
