Transfer pump shaft oil seal for Toyota driveline
Why you need it
This precision lip seal keeps lubricant inside the transfer assembly and blocks dust, mud, and water from entering. A healthy seal maintains oil pressure, protects the pump body, and prevents noise, wear, and overheating. Itβs a small, low-cost part that saves the transfer case and bearings from expensive damage.
How it works βοΈ
The seal uses a metal case and oil-resistant elastomer (NBR/FKM) with a spring-loaded (garter) lip that hugs the rotating shaft. Micro ribs return oil inward while the spring maintains constant contact at all RPM. The result is a stable barrier for ATF/gear oil under vacuum and low pressure inside the transfer pump housing.
What happens if itβs broken β
Leaks show as wet housing, drips, burnt smell, or whining pump. Continued driving lowers oil level, causing slip, heat build-up, bearing wear, and possible seizure. Fluid loss can contaminate clutches and destroy the pump. Replace at first signs of seepage. During install, clean the bore, lightly oil the lip, inspect shaft surface, and press the seal square with the correct driver to depth.
