Why you need it
Modern engines depend on accurate lambda feedback to protect the catalytic converter, prevent carbon buildup, and maintain factory power. A correct signal means stable cold starts and efficient cruising .
How it works
Inside is a heated zirconia element with a pump‑current circuit. Unlike a simple narrowband switch, it outputs a precise signal across lean and rich ranges. The built‑in heater brings the sensor to operating temperature quickly, ensuring closed‑loop control even after cold starts.
If it fails
Symptoms include rough idle, higher fuel use, sulfur smell, hesitation, MIL on, and possible limp mode. Long term, the cat may overheat or foul. Common codes: P0133, P2195, P2196. Always check for exhaust leaks, wiring/connector damage, and replace upstream sensors in pairs on high‑mileage cars.
