This part is essential to control superheat, prevent icing, and protect the compressor. If your Toyota’s AC is weak at idle, swings hot–cold, or ices up, the metering valve is often the culprit. How it Works ⚙️
A temperature-sensing bulb and diaphragm adjust an internal pin, throttling liquid refrigerant into the evaporator. By balancing bulb temperature and evaporator outlet pressure, it maintains correct superheat, ensuring maximum heat exchange without flooding the compressor.
When It Fails ⚠️
Stuck closed: low evaporator flow, warm air, hissing, low suction. Stuck open: evaporator flooding, frost on lines, erratic cooling, compressor damage. Long-term issues include high fuel use, premature clutch wear, and contamination from debris.
