This expansion device regulates refrigerant flow into the evaporator, keeping vent temperatures steady and the compressor protected. It is essential for fast coolβdown, even airflow, and reliable HVAC performance in warm climates or stopβandβgo traffic.
Why you need it
Proper metering prevents evaporator flooding or starving, improving comfort and fuel efficiency. It also reduces compressor strain, extending system life and keeping pressures within safe limits.
How it works
A thermal element senses outlet temperature and superheat. It modulates a needle over a small orifice, dropping highβside pressure to lowβside. The evaporator then boils the refrigerant, absorbing cabin heat and moisture for crisp, dry air.
What happens if it breaks β οΈ
Stuck closed: warm air, low suction pressure, hissing, starved evaporator, compressor overheating. Stuck open: icing on lines, fluctuating temps, short cycling, poor idle cooling. Debris or corrosion can cause erratic control or leaks. Replace with new Oβrings, evacuate, vacuum, and recharge to spec; consider renewing the receiver/drier for best results.
