Steering Rack Boot (Gaiter)

This bellows-style dust boot seals the end of the rack-and-pinion, keeping grease in and road grit, water, and salt out. It shields the rack shaft, inner tie rod, and rack seals, preserving smooth steering and extending system life. A healthy boot is small money that prevents a big steering repair.

Why you need it

Without a tight boot, contamination grinds the rack surface and cuts the seals. That turns into fluid leaks, free play, noise, and failed inspections. A fresh, OE-style gaiter keeps the mechanism clean, protects bearings, and maintains precise steering feel.

How it works

A flexible EPDM/TPE bellows slips over the rack housing and inner tie rod and locks with clamps. As you steer, the boot compresses and extends with the tie rod travel while a tiny vent path balances air pressure so it won’t balloon or collapse. Correct length prevents stretch at full lock.

When brokenβ€”what happens

Signs include torn rubber, grease sling, or dampness. Soon after, rust forms on the rack, seals score, and power steering fluid may leak. Steering can feel heavy or notchy; inner tie rod wear causes play, pull, and uneven tire wear. Left alone, the entire rack can require replacement.

Replace boots in pairs, clean grooves, use new clamps, center the wheel before tightening, avoid twisting the bellows, and recheck alignment after service.
