Steering Rack Housing Rubber Grommet β OE Grade
Why this part is needed οΈ
This small rubber grommet seals the steering rack housing on select Toyota platforms. It blocks dust, water, and engine-bay fumes, while cushioning the rack where it meets the housing. By stabilizing the interface and keeping grease clean, it preserves precise steering feel, reduces vibration transfer, and helps nearby boots and bushings last longer.
How it works
Built from oil- and heat-resistant elastomer, it press-fits into a machined groove and lightly compresses around the rack guide area. The shape maintains a tight barrier through temperature swings and steering travel. Under load it acts as a micro-damper, absorbing kickback and preventing micro-movement that can wear the housing and inner tie rod seats.
What happens if itβs broken
When cracked, hardened, or missing, contamination enters and grease thins out. Expect free play at the wheel, knocks over bumps, off-center wander, heavier effort in cold, and uneven tire wear. Over time, moisture causes corrosion that can score the rack shaft and force a costly steering gear overhaul. Replacing the grommet restores sealing and steering stability.
Tech tip
Direct-fit install: clean the seat, inspect boots, and use a thin silicone-safe lube for seating. After assembly, verify torque specs and check alignment.
