Drive Pinion Oil Seal for Rear Differential ️
This seal keeps gear oil inside the final drive and protects the pinion bearings where the yoke and flange rotate. It locks oil in, keeps dust and water out, and helps the drivetrain run quiet and cool. A fresh, tight seal means smooth acceleration and long gear life.
Why you need it ✅
Without a proper seal, gear oil leaks from the nose of the differential. Low oil leads to heat, bearing wear, metal noise, and costly repairs. Replacing the seal is cheap insurance for the ring and pinion set.
How it works ⚙️
A spring-loaded elastomer lip hugs the pinion shaft while the metal outer shell locks into the housing. The lip rides on the yoke surface and returns oil inward as the shaft spins. A dust lip adds extra dirt protection.
If the seal fails
Signs include wet housing at the pinion, driveway spots, burnt gear smell, howl on throttle, and vibration after fluid loss. Keep driving and you risk seized bearings, chipped gears, and a full differential rebuild.
Tech tips
Inspect and polish the yoke seal surface or sleeve it. Set pinion nut torque and preload correctly, refill with the right GL-5 oil, and make sure the vent is clear. Lightly oil the lip during install.
