Automatic Transmission Oil Pan Assembly
This steel sump is the lower housing of the gearbox. It stores ATF, seals the case, and protects the valve body from road impacts ๏ธ. A shaped flange and gasket keep the system tight, the magnet traps wear particles, and the drain plug allows clean service. Without a healthy pan, the transmission cannot maintain correct fluid level or cooling.
How it Works โ๏ธ
Mounted at the bottom of the automatic gearbox, the pan holds ATF that the pump draws through the filter. The fluid then lubricates clutches, cools moving parts, and enables smooth shifting. The panโs surface dissipates heat, while the magnet collects metallic fines. A flat, true flange and correct torque prevent leaks.
Why You Need It
Road debris, corrosion, stripped threads, or a warped flange cause leaks and contamination. A quality ATF pan ensures proper sealing, clean fluid, stable pressure, and easy service during fluid and filter changes.
What Happens If Itโs Broken
- ATF leaks, low level, delayed/harsh shifts
- Overheating, clutch slip, burnt fluid smell
- Metal debris recirculates, solenoid and valve wear
- Eventual gearbox failure and costly rebuild
Replacement Tips
Use new gasket or OEM RTV, clean the magnet, replace the filter and O-rings, torque bolts in a crisscross pattern to spec, and fill with the correct ATF type and level.
