Automatic Transmission Oil Pan Assembly ?οΈ
This component sits at the bottom of the automatic gearbox and works as the main reservoir for transmission fluid. It is needed to keep a stable oil supply for the pump, protect the valve body area, and help control operating temperature by spreading heat through the pan surface.
How it works βοΈ
While driving, fluid drains back into the pan, then the pump pulls it through the pickup and sends it under pressure to clutches, bands, and hydraulic circuits. The pan also catches fine debris and, on many setups, supports the filter/strainer mounting so the system stays clean and sealed.
What happens if itβs damaged β
A bent or cracked pan, stripped drain threads, or a leaking gasket can cause fluid loss. Low fluid leads to delayed engagement, harsh shifts, slipping, overheating, and fast wear of friction plates. In severe cases the transmission can fail due to oil starvation and contaminated fluid circulation.
When to replace ?
Replace it if you see wet oil around the pan rail, impact dents near the pickup zone, or recurring gasket leaks after proper torque. Always check sealing surface flatness and refill with the correct ATF level.
