Why this part is needed
The transfer clutch hub is the core support for the multi‑plate clutch inside the transfer case. It keeps friction and steel plates aligned, locks to the shaft with splines, and delivers engine torque to the front or rear output. Without a healthy hub, the clutch can’t engage cleanly, and 4WD/AWD performance suffers.
How it works
Hydraulic pressure applies the clutch pack; the plates bite and transmit torque through the hub. The inner splines grip the shaft, outer lugs index the plates, and oil passages bathe the stack with ATF for cooling and smooth engagement. Hardened steel construction resists shock loads and prevents spline twist.
What happens if it’s broken ❗
Signs include delayed 4WD, slip on takeoff, shudder, binding in tight turns, burnt ATF smell, or metal noise. Continued driving overheats the pack, warps plates, strips splines, and can crack the drum or damage bearings and gears. Replace the hub promptly and renew plates, seals, and fluid for reliability.
Tech tips
Measure clutch clearances, inspect drum grooves and snap rings, pre‑lube splines, and torque fasteners to spec. Use the correct ATF to protect the clutch.
