How it works
When you select 1st, the synchronizer matches shaft speeds, then the sleeve locks this gear to the mainshaft. Its helical teeth mesh with the counter gear on the layshaft, converting engine power into controlled, high-torque rotation. Accurate tooth profile and correct backlash prevent noise and vibration.
What happens if it fails β
Chipped or worn teeth cause grinding, shudder, or pop-out from 1st. Delayed take-off, metallic noise, and metal shavings in oil are common. Continued driving can damage the synchro, hub, bearings, and cluster gear, leading to costly full-rebuilds. Always replace as a set with synchro and inspect forks.
