Speedometer Drive Pinion Gear

This small gear is a key link between your gearbox/transfer case and the speedometer system. ⚙️ It is needed to convert drivetrain rotation into a clean speed signal, so the dash can show true vehicle speed and the odometer can count distance correctly.

How it works

The pinion meshes with the internal drive gear and spins a speedometer cable or sensor input (depending on setup). As road speed changes, the gear turns faster or slower, creating a proportional signal. A correct tooth profile keeps the reading stable and prevents needle bounce.

When it’s failing or broken

If the gear strips, cracks, or wears out, the speed reading may drop to zero, jump around, or show the wrong speed. You may also lose odometer mileage, which affects service intervals and resale records. In severe cases, broken teeth can create debris that accelerates wear inside the housing.
