Reverse Light Gear Switch Assembly ?

This small transmission-mounted switch is the “signal maker” that tells the car you selected reverse. It is needed for safe backing up, clear warning to other drivers, and to help features like parking sensors or camera activation on many setups. When you shift into R, the gearbox mechanism presses the internal plunger, closing an electrical circuit and sending power to the reverse lamps instantly.

How It Works ⚙️

Inside the housing, a spring-loaded contact opens and closes as the shift rail moves. The switch threads into the transmission case and seals against oil and moisture. Once the contacts close, current flows to the rear bulbs (and sometimes the ECU/body module), turning on the reverse lights.

If It Fails ?

A bad unit can cause no reverse lights, intermittent lighting, or lights staying on all the time. That can lead to failed inspection, increased risk of backing accidents, warning codes on some models, and confusion for drivers behind you. Leaks at the threads or corrosion in the connector can also create poor contact.
