Why this part is needed ✅
This small hardened disc is used to set correct valve clearance in many Toyota DOHC/OHC cylinder heads. Proper clearance keeps the valve train quiet, protects the camshaft lobes, and helps the engine breathe right for smooth idle, strong power, and good fuel economy.
How it works
The shim sits between the cam follower/bucket and the valve tip (or in the follower system, depending on design). By selecting the correct thickness, it fine-tunes the gap so the valve opens fully when the cam pushes, and fully closes when the cam rotates away. This prevents heat-related expansion from causing tight or loose clearances.
What happens if it’s worn or incorrect ❌
If the shim is damaged, too thin, or too thick, you may get tapping noise, misfire, rough running, and loss of power. Tight clearance can burn valves and drop compression; loose clearance can hammer the cam and followers, speeding up wear. Rechecking clearance after timing belt/chain work is strongly recommended.
