This precision unit tames engine shake by cancelling secondβorder vibrations common in compact multiβcylinder motors. You need it to keep idle silky, protect bearings, and reduce cabin buzzβespecially on long commutes. A healthy balance system also extends the life of engine mounts, accessories, and exhaust hangers.
How it Works
Inside the block, a counterβrotating shaft with weighted lobes is driven by gear or chain from the crank. It spins at twice crank speed, timed to marks so the counterforce meets each vibration pulse. Oilβfed journals and hardened surfaces ensure low friction and stable phase control for accurate balancing.
If It Fails
Expect harsh idle, buzzing at 2β3k rpm, rattles on start, and increased NVH. Misβtiming can load bearings, fatigue mounts, and raise oil temps. Severe wear may shed metal into oil or seize the shaft, risking timing damage and costly overhaul.
Install Tips
Align timing marks, torque to spec, prime with clean oil, renew seals/gaskets, and change oil/filter after first heat cycle.
