Crankshaft Timing Pulley – Overview ⚙️

This precision gear mounts on the crank nose and keeps the timing belt perfectly aligned with the camshafts. Built from hardened steel with accurate tooth geometry, it locks to the crank via a keyway and ensures stable ignition and valve timing under all loads.

Why your engine needs it ⏱️

Accurate synchronization means smooth idle, strong mid‑range torque, clean emissions, and reliable cold starts. A fresh pulley protects the belt from wandering, reduces noise, and preserves fuel economy.

How it works

The toothed profile meshes with the timing belt while reference marks help set TDC. The pulley partners with the tensioner and idlers to maintain belt tension. Its precise bore and key prevent micro‑slip that can shift timing.

What happens if it fails ❗

Worn teeth, a sloppy bore, or a damaged keyway can cause belt skip, misfire, hard starting, loss of power, and a check‑engine light. Severe slip may lead to internal damage on some engines. Wobble can also chew belts and stress the front oil seal.

Replacement tips

Install with a new belt, tensioner, and front seal; clean the crank snout; align timing marks; and torque the crank bolt to spec.
