Power Steering Pump Idler Pulley – OE-Grade Replacement
Why this part is needed
This pulley keeps the auxiliary/serpentine belt tight and perfectly aligned so the power steering pump gets stable drive. Proper belt wrap means smooth hydraulic assist, light steering feel, and quiet operation. On high-mile Mitsubishi vehicles, refreshing this pulley prevents belt slip and protects the pump.
How it works ⚙️
A precision steel wheel with a sealed high-speed bearing bolts to the bracket and guides the belt over the pump. The bearing spins freely, holds tracking true, and limits friction and heat. The pulley’s diameter and offset set belt geometry; the tensioner provides load while this unit ensures correct contact on the P/S pump for reliable assist.
What happens if it’s broken ❗
Typical signs are cold-start squeal, chirp, wobble, belt dust, and a hot rubber smell. Steering can feel heavy at parking speeds due to pump slip. If the bearing seizes or the rim cracks, the belt may jump or snap, causing loss of steering assist and, on shared drives, charging or A/C loss.
Tech notes ️
- Inspect belt for glazing/cracks; replace if worn.
- Spin old pulley by hand; roughness or play = replace.
- Torque the center bolt to spec and verify belt routing.
- Use thread locker and keep the dust cap intact.
