Engine Valve Lifter (Hydraulic Tappet) ?️

This internal engine part is needed to keep the valve train working smoothly and quietly. It maintains correct valve clearance automatically, so the camshaft can open and close the valves with accurate timing. When clearance is wrong, power drops and noise rises, so this component is vital for clean running and long engine life.

How It Works ⚙️

Inside the lifter is a small oil chamber and check valve. Engine oil pressure fills the chamber, taking up any tiny gaps between the cam and valve mechanism. This creates a firm “hydraulic” support that follows the cam profile, reducing lash and helping the engine breathe properly at all RPM.

Signs of Failure & What Happens If Broken ❗

If it sticks, collapses, or wears, you may hear ticking/knocking from the top of the engine, especially cold. Misfires, rough idle, reduced acceleration, and higher fuel use can follow. Continued driving can cause accelerated cam wear, valve train damage, and in extreme cases bent valves from poor control.
