Information
Engine Connecting Rod Bearing Shells
These precision big-end bearings support the connecting rods on the crankshaft and keep a stable oil film between moving parts. They are vital for smooth rotation, correct clearances, and healthy oil pressure. Without them, friction and heat rise fast, leading to costly engine damage.
Why this part is needed โ
During every power stroke, the rod pushes on the crank pin. The bearing shells spread that load, prevent metal-to-metal contact, and absorb shock. Quality triโmetal layers (steel/copper/overlay) protect the journal and extend engine life under heavy duty use.
How it works ๏ธ
Two half-shells sit in the rod and cap, locked by tangs and bearing crush. Pressurized oil feeds through the grooves to float the rod on a thin film. Correct clearance keeps the film stable across the RPM range and maintains oil pressure.
What happens if worn or broken โ ๏ธ
Symptoms include cold-start knock, hot idle rumble, low oil pressure, glitter in oil, copper showing on shells, and in severe cases a spun bearing or seized crank. Continued driving can score the journal and require crank grinding.
Tech notes
Measure journals, check clearance with plastigage, use assembly lube, and torque rod bolts to spec. Keep all surfaces clean to avoid debris embedding.
