Engine Crankcase Vent Hose (Blow-By Line)
This hose is a key part of the crankcase ventilation system. It carries oily blow-by vapors from the engine crankcase back to the intake path so they can be burned in the combustion process instead of leaking into the air. A healthy line keeps crankcase pressure under control, helps seals survive longer, and reduces sludge by keeping airflow moving.
Why you need this hose β
During normal driving, a small amount of combustion gas slips past piston rings (blow-by). This hose gives those gases a safe route to the intake, supporting stable idle and cleaner running. It also helps the PCV system react correctly under load and vacuum changes.
How it works
The hose connects the crankcase/valve cover breather outlet to the intake side. Vacuum and pressure pulses move vapors through the line, while oil mist is carried along and later separated or burned. The rubber compound must resist heat, oil, and vibration without collapsing.
What happens if itβs cracked or blocked β οΈ
Common symptoms
- Rough idle, whistling, or vacuum leak behavior
- Oil smell, oily residue around the engine bay
- Higher oil consumption and extra smoke on acceleration
- Check engine light from air/fuel imbalance
- Pressure buildup causing seepage at gaskets and seals
