Engine Crankshaft Bearing (Toyota)
This precision engine bearing is a small part with a huge job: it supports the crankshaft journals so the crank can spin smoothly under heavy load. β Inside the engine, the crankshaft turns thousands of times per minute, and this bearing creates a controlled clearance where pressurized oil forms a thin βoil filmβ layer. That oil film prevents metal-to-metal contact, reduces friction, and keeps crankshaft alignment stable for long engine life ?.
Why this part is needed
Every start-up, acceleration, and highway cruise puts stress on the crank. A healthy bearing keeps oil pressure steady, limits vibration, and protects the crankshaft and engine block from scoring.
How it works
The bearing shell sits in the engine block/cap saddle. When the crank rotates, oil is fed into the journal area, creating hydrodynamic lubrication. The bearing surface is designed to handle load, heat, and microscopic debris without seizing.
If the bearing is worn or broken
Expect low oil pressure, knocking/rumbling noises, metal flakes in oil, overheating, and possible crankshaft damage. If ignored, it can spin in the housing and lead to full engine failure ?.
