Why it’s needed

How it works

Two half-shells (steel back with soft bearing layer) sit in the block and cap. Oil grooves and feed holes supply lubricant; rotation builds hydrodynamic pressure that separates metal surfaces. Locating tangs prevent movement; precise torque locks everything in place.

When worn or failed

Low oil pressure, cold-start knock, glitter in oil, and rising temps appear. Continued use risks spun shells, scored journals, loss of compression, and full seizure. Always measure clearance, match size grade/undersize, torque caps, and use assembly lube.
