Rear Drum Brake Wheel Cylinder Repair Kit for Toyota Vans ๏ธ
Why this part is needed
This kit restores sealing and pressure in the rear drum brake wheel cylinder. With fresh cups, boots, and springs, it stops brake fluid leaks, brings back firm pedal feel, and evens out rear braking. It is a smart, cost-effective fix when the cylinder bore is still good, helping extend drum and shoe life and improving safety on loaded vans .
How it works
In a drum brake, fluid pressure moves two small pistons inside the wheel cylinder. They push the shoes against the drum to slow the vehicle. New rubber seals keep pressure in, dust boots keep dirt out, and the return spring centers the pistons. With correct lubrication and clean bore, the pistons glide smoothly, giving stable, balanced braking in all weather.
What happens if it fails
Worn seals cause seepage under the boots, soft or sinking pedal, longer stopping distance, and pull to one side. Fluid can contaminate shoes, causing grab or squeal. In severe cases the rear brakes do little work, ABS may light, and drums overheat or score. Ignoring leaks risks sudden loss of braking power.
Tech notes and best practice โ
- Inspect and lightly hone the cylinder bore; replace the body if pitted.
- Use fresh DOT 3/4 fluid; bleed until clear and bubbleโfree.
- Lubricate pistons with brake fluid only; no mineral oils.
- Adjust shoes, verify drum diameter, and recheck for leaks after road test.
