Why you need it ️
Old paper gaskets crush once and cannot reseal. Fresh gasket, O-rings, and washers stop seepage at the housing face, studs, and plugs. This protects ring and pinion, bearings, and seals—saving the diff from costly wear.
How it works
The compressible gasket fits between the axle housing and the carrier. When torqued in a crisscross pattern, it forms a uniform barrier. Copper/aluminum washers seal fasteners; O-rings seal plugs and breathers. Together they keep the correct oil bath and proper lubrication film.
If it’s worn or broken ⚠️
Signs include wet housing, drips , gear whine on cruise, burnt oil smell, vibration, or clunk on takeoff. Continued leaks overheat the diff, pit bearings, and chip gears—worst case, a lock-up. Replace ASAP. Clean both faces, remove old RTV, align dowels, and torque to spec.
