Secondary Air Injection Pump 🌬️

This electric air pump is used to push fresh air into the exhaust system during cold engine start. It helps the catalytic converter heat up faster, lowers harmful emissions, and keeps the engine control system working within factory limits. A good air supply is especially important on Toyota engines where emission control is tightly monitored by the ECU.

Why This Part Is Needed 🔧

When the engine is cold, fuel mixture is richer and exhaust gases are not fully clean. The pump adds oxygen to the exhaust stream, helping unburned fuel burn off before it reaches the tailpipe. This supports smoother cold start performance and helps the vehicle pass emission testing.

How It Works ⚙️

After start-up, the ECU activates the pump for a short time. The electric motor spins an internal fan, sending clean air through valves and pipes into the exhaust manifold area. Once the catalytic converter reaches working temperature, the system switches off automatically.

If It Fails ⚠️

A broken unit may cause a check engine light, fault codes, rough cold idle, failed emissions test, or unusual whining noise. If ignored, moisture and carbon can damage related valves and make repairs more expensive.
