GEAR ASSY, CAMSHAFT TIMING

VVT-i Camshaft Timing Gear – Restore Smooth Power and Economy ⚙️
Why this part is needed
This camshaft timing gear (cam phaser) keeps valve timing precise in VVT-i engines. It advances or retards the cam to improve low‑end torque, mid‑range power, and fuel economy ⛽. A healthy unit gives clean idle, quick starts, and strong response while keeping emissions low.
How it works
Engine oil pressure, controlled by the OCV/solenoid, flows into the gear’s internal chambers. A rotor inside turns the camshaft a few degrees ahead or behind the crank. The ECU commands angle changes based on load, RPM, and temperature. Seals and a lock pin ensure stable position during start‑up, then the gear freely phases under oil pressure ️.
What happens if it’s broken
Worn seals or a sticking lock pin cause cold‑start rattle, rough idle, low power, high fuel use, and hesitation. You may see a check engine light, hard starting, or metallic noise from the timing cover area. Left unchecked, timing can drift, risking misfire, soot buildup, and accelerated cam chain wear ❗
Tech tips
Always diagnose oil quality and the OCV first. Replace with clean oil and a new gasket; torque to spec. Prime with oil before fitting for quiet starts.
