Why you need it

The bottom end lives on a thin oil film. These bearings center the crank, set oil clearance, cut friction, and stabilize oil pressure. Fresh shells stop hot idle knock, protect journals, and restore smooth starts, especially after high mileage, towing, or a rebuild. A correct set keeps the rotating assembly balanced and quiet for thousands of kilometers.

How it works

Each half-shell locates in the block and cap with tabs. A tri‑metal overlay on a steel back forms a hydrodynamic wedge with pressurized oil. Feed grooves and holes route oil to the crank throws, while thrust faces control end‑play. With proper clearance, the crank floats on oil, delivering smooth rotation, low wear, and steady pressure .

If worn or damaged

Watch for low oil pressure, metallic knock on load, copper showing on shells, glitter in oil, crank walk, and rising temps. Ignore it and the film collapses—bearings can spin, seize, or weld to the journal, ruining the crank and even the block. Replace after oil starvation, overheating, or when measured clearances are out of spec.
